Masai and D&G

I'll start with introducing my ethnic background as it relates a little to what we did in class today. My great grandfather left India more than a 100 years ago and migrated to East Africa specifically to Zanzibar which is an Island off the coast of Tanzania and is part of it now. He learnt Swahili and a community was made of people who had migrated from India. It was under the rule of Sultanate of Oman at the time and then came under the British rule. My grandfather along with his 3 brothers and 4 sisters were born there and acquired the Tanzanian passport. Later on my father was born there. My grandfather along with my grandmother, my father, one of my grandfather's sisters and her husband migrated to Dubai, U.A.E. This was just around the time the U.A.E was forming. My brother and I were born in Dubai so we dont have much grasp on Swahili.

I have been to Tanzania and Zanzibar about 6 times to date and I love Zanzibar. I have seen some masai but have never talked to them. The video that we saw in class today about the way masai talk with saying 'aaaaeeee' after the other says something is like confirming or acknowledging with what the person is saying. What I noticed is that the Tanzanian's who may be of Indian origin or natives of Tanzania have the same habit of saying 'aaee' but its shorter and less frequent while speaking Swahili.

The D&G advert was really disturbing. Women who wear clothes like that are not respecting their body. Some young girls who look at the advert want to wear clothes like that and dont know if it is right or wrong to wear clothes like that. Men like me sometimes get ashamed of looking at these type of advertisements.
